Quantum Theory and Measurement
Edited by John Archibald Wheeler and Wojciech Hubert Zureic
The forty-nine papers collected here illuminate the meaning of quantum theory as it is disclosed in the measurement process. Together with an introduction and a supplemental annotated bibliography, they discuss issues that make quantum theory, overarching principle of twentieth-century physics, appear to many to prefigure a new revolution in science. This book will appeal to readers interested in the sciences and, philosophy and is suitable for course use.
The first group of papers highlights the famous twenty-eight-year dialogue between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr and culminates in a description of quantum theory's revolutionary concept, the elementary quantum phenomenon. Papers in other sections deal with the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen "paradox," "hidden variables," delayed-choice experiments, entropy increase in the light of quantum theory, quantum consequences for the capacity of an... The first group of papers highlights the famous twenty-eight-year dialogue between Albert Einstein and Niels Bohr and culminates in a description of quantum theory's revolutionary concept, the elementary quantum phenomenon. Papers in other sections deal with the Einstein-Podolsky-Rosen "paradox," "hidden variables," delayed-choice experiments, entropy increase in the light of quantum theory, quantum consequences for the capacity of an information channel, and
recent Soviet and American work on "quantum non-demolition" experiments, widely believed to open the way to instrumentation of a new order of sensitivity. The collection includes Wigner's lectures on the quantum theory of measurement, never before published, as well as translations of London and Bauer's classic treatment of the same subject, Bom's pathbreaking statistical interpretation of quantum mechanics, Heisenberg's introduction of the principle of indeterminism, Schrodinger's "cat paradox," and Bohr and Rosenfeld's analysis of the measurability of electromagnetic field quantities.
John Archibald Wheeler is director of the Center for Theoretical Physics of the University of Texas at Austin. Wojciech Hubert Zurek is Richard Chace Tolman Fellow in Theoretical Astrophysics at the California Institute of Technology.
