To many, even tolerably well educated people, 'Jerusalem' and 'The Tiger' are, perhaps, the only poems of William Blake's with which they would claim more than a passing familiarity. Since, undeniably, much of Blake's poetry is difficult and elusive, most readers would gladly accept a key to his baffling private mythology and some expert guidance through the maze of his elaborate symbolism.
Dr Gardner, the author of a recent study of Blake's poetry. Infinity on the Anvil, offers such help to the reader and enables Blake to speak across the centuries to our own time, challenging the hypocrisy, oppression, religious expediency and social divisions that created misery in his day and still persist.
