To many, even tolerably well educated people, 'Jerusalem' and 'The Tiger' are, perhaps, the only poems of William Blake's with which they would claim more than a passing familiarity. Since, undeniably, much of Blake's poetry is difficult and elusive, most readers would gladly accept a key to his baffling private mythology and some expert guidance through the maze of his elaborate symbolism.
Dr Gardner, the author of a recent study of Blake's poetry.
