Art and Literature comprises a wide-ranging collection of Freud's writings on the psychological aspects of the creative process.
These show how the imaginative insight of onefeCreative genius can shed light on the works of such other artistic and literary giants as Shakespeare, Leonardo da Vinci, Michelangelo, Goethe, Ibsen and Dostoevsky. The fascinating role played in the creative process by fantasy and day-dreaming is discussed, Shakespeare's symbolism is analysed, and there are also enlightening comments on such subjects as humour, 'the uncanny', criminality and psychopathy in stage characters.
Outstanding in this collection of essays are Freud's sensitive analysis of how Leonardo da Vinci's homosexuality is reflected in his work, and his unravelling of the obscure problems of a demonological neurosis and of Michelangelo's statue of Moses.
This volume, which contains eight plates and several line-drawings, concludes with Freud's masterly appreciation of Goethe.

The Pelican Freud Library
Art and Literature has been edited by Albert Dickson for the Pelican Freud Library. Based on James Strachey's Standard Edition, this collection of fifteen volumes will be the first full paperback edition of Freud's works in English.
