A long, narrow, and isolated island in the Pacific Ocean, Taiwan is filled with numerous high mountains rising upward to many different altitudes. These mountains give Taiwan an extremely diverse topography. Consequently, the island possesses a multifarious climate, including tropical, subtropical, temperate, and even frgid climates. Deep oceanic influences, such as high humidity and plentiful amounts of rain, give Taiwan an abundance of flourishing, diverse vegetation. Naturally, such a concentrated and complex ecological environment is conducive to attracting a tremendous variety of different bird sf)ecies.
With respect to the four seasons, Taiwan's mountainous regions and other mid- to high-elevation areas are much more subject to climatic changes than areas on the plains. Situated in the sub-tropics, Taiwan is a summer or winter resort for birds from all of the surrounding regions, north and south of the island.
