THE EARLIEST WHEELED TRANSPORT
FROM THE ATLANTIC COAST TO the CASPIAN SEA
Stuart Piggott
In this remarkable, pioneering book-the product of two decades of research - Stuart Piggott presents a detailed history of the earliest wheeled vehicles. Focusing primarily on technology, he investigates developments in the whole of Europe and western Russia, ranging from the beginnings of wheeled transport more than 5,000 years ago to the advances made by Rome in the last centuries B.C. Throughout, he takes into account ideas and evidence that have had a profound bearing on the worldwide progress of civilization.
What did Europe owe to the ancient East? Where did wheeled vehicles originate? What was their impact on the social and economic development of mankind? The author's answers, based on information assembled from widely scattered sources, are more comprehensive than any attempted previously.
As early as 1815 archaeologists unearthed remains that gave tangible evidence of... Tovább

What did Europe owe to the ancient East? Where did wheeled vehicles originate? What was their impact on the social and economic development of mankind? The author's answers, based on information assembled from widely scattered sources, are more comprehensive than any attempted previously.
As early as 1815 archaeologists unearthed remains that gave tangible evidence of prehistoric wheeled vehicles in Europe. Since then there have been immense numbers of discoveries, most of which Professor Piggott chronicles and discusses here. It is now possible to build up a technological sequence from disc to spoked to iron-tired wheel, and from ox-drawn cart and wagon to horse-drawn carriage and chariot.
The wealth of archaeological data and literary material from classical and early Irish sources is handled with a mastery that will convince the reader that this is a definitive work of scholarship and a landmark in archaeological studies. Vissza
