THE EMPEROR FRANZ JOSEPH
It is many years since a good biographical study of Franz Joseph was published in English. Dr. Janetschek has written a brilliantly perceptive portrait of the Emperor himself, his family circle, and his times. This is not a political biography—although the complicated background of Central European diplomacy and politics is adroitly sketched in—but a contribution to the history of the old Austro-Hun-garian Imperial Court.

All the actors on the crowded Haps-burg stage are portrayed with skill and affectionate understanding : the Emperor throughout his long reign (1848-1916); the beautiful and tragic Empress Elizabeth; the ill-fated Crown Prince Rudolf who died so mysteriously at Mayeriing; the Archduke Franz Ferdinand, whose assassination at Sarajevo precipitated the first World War, and many others.
The illustrations are all from Viennese sources.
Over 40,000 copies sold of the original Viennese edition.
