Nikolai Leskov is one of the great Russian story tellers, best-known in the West for 'Lady Macbeth of the Mtensk District' which Shostakovich made into an opera and Stalin attackedfbr its modernist and romantic tendencies. The five stories in this volume range from the psychological drama of'Lady Macbeth', in which a bored provincial wife becomes murderously infatu-ated with one of her servants, through the picaresque landscape of 'The Enchanted Wanderer', peopled by gypsy dancers, holy men and Cossack chiefs and swinging with dizzying speed between realism and romance, barbarity and refinement.
Leskov is a voice from the great age of the Russian novel. Those who admire Gogol (whose sardonic humour is echoed in 'The Left-handed Craftsman'), Tolstoy and Turgenev will welcome these powerfully evocative stories of Russian life.
