The Face of the Tiger is the result of an obsession. , Several thousand hours of observation and tracking are captured in a single volume that examines the Hfe of the world's most powerful predator. Through the dank, wet jungles of the Nepalese terai Charles McDougal has followed his tigers through monsoon and winter, season after season. By noting differences in face patterns and linking these with differences in pug marks he has established the individual identities of the tigers that share his home. The Dhakre Tiger, a sub-adult that took over the role of resident male in western Chitawan; Mohan, a young tiger who learned to kill during the day and brought together a whole group of tigers to share his feast; the tigress Bangi who was off like a shot as soon as a spotlight was turned on; these and others, their relationships, their friendships, their love life, all are described through the objective eye of the trained observer. Moments of excitement and despair, of happiness and sadness lead the reader to an understanding of this the most elusive of all the great animals.
Dr. McDougal has done his homework well. The great naturalist-hunters of the last century like Brander have been read, contemporary authors such as Schaller have been studied, but the core of the book, the intimate hfe of the tiger, is the result of his own unique observations in that wonderful remote area of Chitawan in the Nepalese terai.
THE AUTHOR
Charles (Chtick) McDougal was born in Colorado and educated at the Universities of Colorado and Nev^ Mexico. He gained his Ph.D in Anthropology at the latter institution in 1963. He has published a series of anthropological papers mainly on the peoples of India and Nepal, where he now lives. Since 1972 he has been Director of Operations and Chief Naturalist at Tiger Tops Jungle Lodge in Royal Chitawan National Park, Nepal - where many of the observations of the wild tigers that feature in this book were made.
Chuck admits that he is obsessed with tigers. He began by hunting them and has ended up as one of the prime advocates of their conservation. Since 1961 he has spent most of his time in tiger country in Nepal and India.
Tracking a tiger through the jungle-clad ravines of Chitawan with Chuck picking out and interpreting the telltale signs where the animal has passed is as exhausting and exhilarating an experience as any lover of wildlife could ever imagine. With THE FACE OF THE TIGER he is established as one of the world's most significant students of animal behaviour. Vissza
