The world has seen many dramatic changes since the first edition of The Guinness Book of Records. There are obvious developments such as space flight and the microprocessor, which in 1955 belonged largely in the realms of science fiction. Less obviously, women's marathons, and one-day international cricket were unknown, while an explosion in the fields of electronic média and recorded entertainment means that the statistical record of today's life is constantly in need of update. The Guinness Book of Records reflects these changes year by year. This year's edition is no exception and among the highlights included are features on the rarest animals and what we are doing to protect them and recent events in the Soviet Union.
