Here is Thackeray's marvellously detailed account of a four-month tour of Ireland he made during the summer and winter of 1842. The whole of contemporary Irish hfe is here: horse-racing, agricultural fairs, fishing, sight-seeing, the great cities and cathedrals, country inns, universities, schools and convents, grand balls and beggars.
The book's interest is two-fold today, providing as much of an insight into Thackeray's own character as that of the Irish. Clearly an Englishman abroad, he nevertheless paints a vivid portrait of Ireland and the harsh reaUties of Irish Hfe, tempering his humour and satire with descriptions of the country's great natural beauty and the warmth of the people.
The Irish Sketchbook was one of Thackeray's early successes and is a fascinating and colourful kaleidoscope of Irish Hfe on the eve of the Great Famine.
