There are over 140 officially recognised nationalities within the Soviet Union making it the world's largest multiethnic state. As a result of President Gorbachev's 'revolution from above' long held ethnic grievances against the state and rival ethnic communities have surfaced in Soviet society which is undergoing a scale of ethnic and nationalist unrest hitherto unknown in the Soviet Union. Few observers can now doubt that not only does the nationalities question pose the greatest challenge to Gorbachev's plans for the restructuring (perestroika) of the Soviet society and economy, but that it also throws into doubt the very continuation of the Soviet Union within its former territorial boundaries. Yet, the nationalities question has long remained a comparatively neglected area of Soviet Studies.
Written by a specially chosen team of international experts The Nationalities Question in the Soviet Union:
• Provides systematic and authoritative coverage of the twenty most important nationalities within the Soviet Union accounting for over 90% of the total population
• Locates each nationahty within its appropriate historical, geopolitical and cultural context
• Analyses the response of each nationality to the far reaching changes associated with the Gorbachev administration
• Contains a statistical appendix including comparative socioeconomic and demographic data on the nationalities taken from the 1989 All-Union census
The Nationalities Question in the Soviet Union provides an unrivalled coverage of one of the most important issues in world poHtics at the end of the twentieth century. It's multidisciphnary approach and authorship is designed to make the book accessible to a wide range of professional and amateur students of the history, pohtics and culture of the Soviet Union.
