The book includes over two hundred and fifty illustrations, of which twenty-four are colour plates, all specially chosen to illuminate the text. For easy reference the book also contains a consolidated chronology of events, genealogies of monarchs, and a table of prime ministers. An annotated guide to further reading is provided at the end of the volume.
The editor, Dr Kenneth O. Morgan, is Fellow and Praelector, The Queen's College, Oxford. He is the author of several major works on British history, including Consensus and Disunity: The Lloyd George Coalition Government 1918-1922 (Clarendon Press, 1979), 'a stylish and powerful challenge to old orthodoxies' (London Review of Books), and 'a volume the general reader cannot fail to enjoy. . . so good as to be almost impossible to fault.'
