This well-chosen collection of fifteen essays by distin-guished philosophers addresses the leading métaphys-ical issues relating to contemporary modal logic. The framework of possible worlds has been used in philos-ophy to treat topics as diverse as the nature of belief and knowledge, the problem of evil, the concept of causa-tion, and the mind-body problem. The essays included in this volume, however, are concerned primarily with the framework itself. They succeed both in making accessible to nonlogicians the formal, technical aspects of the topic and in showing the relationship between the technical issues and the less formal, metaphysical questions sur-rounding the modalities.
