Only Pickwick, with his rotund figure and youthful spirit (not to mention his enormous intelligence), could have had the brilliant idea of starting the Pickwick Club.
As the Club's leading light and General Chairman, Pickwick sets out with Tracy Tupman (bachelor), Augustus Snodgrass (poet) and Nathaniel Winkle (sportsman) to expand their experience and report on
their journeys, discoveries, jollities, accidents and all those unexpected adventures that could only happen in the great comic theatre of Dickens's London.
The Pickwick Papers was wildly successful when it first appeared as a monthly magazine serial. There were
Pickwick hats, canes, cigars, coats and song-books as well as numerous parodies, sequels and stage adaptations. The twenty-four-year-old Dickens became immediately famous and, even now, Pickwick and his gloriously entertaining Club have no rivals.
