George Brown's classic The Pruning of Trees, Shrubs and Conifers has no peer in its in-depth, A-to-Z coverage of thousands of woody plant species and cultivars. The heart of this book deals alphabetically with hundreds of genera, describing for each its characteristic habits of growth and flowering, which dictate the timing and kind of pruning required. To bring the book up to date, a new foreword by noted plantsman John Bryan has been added, as well as a complete update of the scientific names appearing in the book.
No other book provides such detailed pruning advice on so many plants. I'm delighted to welcome a new edition of this modern classic.

This book speaks of a life devoted to plants. Each plant is treated individually and in great detail. If one needs to heavily prune Gymnocladus, for instance, it should be done in July to avoid bleeding; Laburnum anagyroides responds to spur pruning, and so on. This book is a great resource.

I have always enjoyed recommending The Pruning of Trees, Shrubs and Conifers to enthusiastic gardeners and arborists. No other book offers pruning and cultivation advice on such a wide range of plants. After twenty years, I continue to refer to it regularly. ScoTT Mayer

Timber Press is proud to rewrn to print one of the essential references in horticulmre, now with an update of all nomenclature and a new foreword by John Bryan, former director of the Strybing Arboretum and fellow of the Institute of Horticulmre. This unique encyclopedia details the best pruning methods for nearly 450 genera of trees, shrubs, conifers, and woody climbers. Several thousand species are discussed in all. No other pruning book offers such an extensive A-to-Z approach.
This book is the product of George Brown's decades of experience as an assistant curator at the Royal Botanic Gardens, Kew, where he was in charge of the extensive arboretum. Few ar-borists have ever achieved his breadth of skill and knowledge with such an array of plant materials, and his legacy lives on in the stately woody plants that still grace Kew.
The author first sets out the general principles of pruning, then applies them to different types of trees and shrubs and the varying situations in which they grow. Special tasks such as minimizing wind and snow damage and maintaining wildlife habitats are fully discussed, as well as pruning methods for combating various diseases and pests. The largest part of the book is an alphabetical listing of hundreds of genera, describing the characteristic habits of growth and flowering that dictate the timing and kind of pruning required. Within each genus, the species most usually grown are mentioned, and variations in pruning needs are described.
With detailed information arranged for easy reference, The Pruning of Trees, Shrubs and Conifers continues to be the standard handbook for all who care for woody plants.
