THE RISE OF HITLER'S THIRD
REICH
On 1 September 1939, German forces invaded Poland, precipitating nearly six years of savage, unrelenting warfare that would leave much of Europe in ruins. For the first three years of the conflict, the mighty Wehrmacht seemed invincible. The swift victory in Poland was followed by the rapid conquest of Denmark and Norway, bringing the Phoney War to an abrupt end. The seeming superiority of German arms was further strengthened when, in May 1940, the Germans launched their Blitzkrieg in the west, overwhelming Holland and Belgium in a matter of days, driving the British Expeditionary Force back across the English Channel and completing the defeat of France in just six weeks.

With their Italian allies faltering in the Balkans and North Africa, the German army invaded Yugoslavia and Greece in early 1941. Again, resistance was easily swept aside, despite British attempts to assist the beleaguered Greeks. Rommel and his famous Afrika Korps were dispatched to Libya, and soon pushed the British back to the borders of Egypt.
When, in June 1941, the Wehrmacht launched its long expected invasion of the Soviet Union, the world held its breath. As before, the German forces swept from victory to victory, their armoured divisions storming across the vast Russian plains before halting at the gates of Moscow amidst the freezing winter of 1941. Although the United States entered the war in December 1941, Britain and the Soviet Union continued to suffer reverses: in the Atlantic the U-boats decimated Allied shipping, while on the Eastern Front the Wehrmacht reached the Volga river and the Caucasian oil fields.
Following the path of Nazi conquest across Europe and North Africa, The Rise of Hitler's Third Reich charts the first three years of World War II with a series of 50 authoritative full-colour maps and 70 colour and black-and-white photographs. Vissza
