HISTORY OF WOED EXPLORATION
lîie history of the exploration of our world is a heroic adventure, a centuries-old quest to extend the limit of our physical horizons and to test our courage and fortitude. The stories of these explorers and their expeditions have, from ancient times, inspired and embodied the ascent of man. From Marco Polo, Columbus and Cook, Livingstone, Burton and Speke, to those intrepid polar explorers Scott and Amundsen, to Edmund Hillary who scaled the peak of Everest - all are a breed apart and all have their own remarkable stories to tell.
The Royal Geographical Society History of World Exploration is the most up-to-date and authoritative work on the subject. The book is written by a team of leading experts under the auspices and general editorial supervision of The Royal Geographical Society and the author and traveller John Keay.

Each section consists of a narrative history of the exploration of a particular continent or region, together with special features on the explorers themselves and their expeditions and equipment. It is also accompanied by a map on which is plotted the routes of all the chief explorers, most of which are based on the expeditionary records. Running through each section are Chronologies, listing key dates in the opening up of each continent. The final section provides an overall survey of the very latest exploration and research, with particular reference to environmental concerns, and also affords a glimpse into the future. The book is illustrated with a unique collection of photographs, paintings and engravings, many taken from the extensive archives of The Royal Geographical Society.
