IS LITERARY STUDIES IN CRISIS?
HOW CAN ENGLISH BE TAUGHT IN THE WAKE OF CRITICAL THEORY?
Since the 1960s the object of literary studies has become increasingly problematic. Critical theory and cultural studies have combined to challenge traditional assumptions of what literature is, placing it on the same shifting territory as issues of gender, race and class. The State of Theory addresses the crucial pedagogical questions raised by the theoretical debate. Written by teachers who are also at the forefront of the development of critical theory, the contributions are challenging, diverse and celebratory.
^ The topics discussed include: race and gender in literary studies; the value, of student 'theory guides'; the impact of practice; and the future for theory in 4/C^v^E'iiglisk'^Departments.
i^^WTli^ contributors are Bernard Sharratt, Thomas Docherty, JJji^fteven Connor, Helen Taylor, Tony Pinkney, Anthony -^^E^thope, Maggie Humm, Patrick Parrinder and K. M.
