In this compelling first növel Jack Kerouac draws on his New England mill town boyhood to create the world of George and Marguerite Martin and their three daughters and five sons, each endowed with an energy and vision of life which drives the narrative from the early part of the century to the years following World War II. On its publication in 1950, The Town and the City elicited critical comparisons with Thomas Wolfe and the recognition of a new voice in American literature. Se ven years later the publication of On the Road made Kerouac the interpreter of his generation. At the time of his death in 1969 he had written more than eighteen books. Critics increasingly perceive these works as a whole, a personal saga in which The Town and the City serves as a prelude.
"His is the kind of növel that lets life lead where it will. More often than not, the depth and breadth of his vision triumphs decisively."
—New York Times Book Review
"Mr. Kerouac has talent of an enviable sort. He writes with clanty compassion, and force. What is even more important; he has something to say." Vissza
