The grassy headlands, sandstone sculpture and curious arbutus trees of the Gulf Islands; immense Douglas fir and the salal, elderberry and bracken fern of the rich forests; alpine tarns, peaks over 7000 feet high and spectacular glaciers; sea lions, Trumpeter swans, Roosevelt elk and marmots; and the romance of names like Kyoquot, Tlupana Inlet, Hole-in-the-Wall, Euclataws Cavern and Pachena Point: all of these suggest the diversity of Vancouver Island's 12,500 square miles.
