One of the most famous books on mythology in the English language, this introduction to the world of myth and legend is a delightful collection of stories. Thomas Bulfinch intended it specifically for the general reader, rather than the academic, so that classical allusions in poetry, painting, prose and sculpture may be more readily understood. He did not clutter his work with theories and explanations, but allowed the tales to speak for themselves.
The majority of the book is devoted to the ancient mythology of Greece and Rome. Subsequent chapters tell more briefly of legends from Hindu, Buddhist, Druid and Norse cultures. Also included is a helpful genealogical table of the Greek and Roman gods, maps of Greece and the eastern Mediterranean, and an index of all the major characters and the places in which their adventures took place.
The Golden Age of Myth and Legend is a fascinating and invaluable work of reference for the general reader.
