This handbook carries its name with some reservation: it ought rather to be regarded as a "working handbook", since the social sciences in Central and Eastern Europe are still "on the move". It documents the development of economipsv political science, and sociology in CEE EU accessi^ countries from 1989 to 2001, with a special emphasis on research. MAX KAASE, political scientist, initiated and directed the project. Born in Krefeld, Germany in 1935, he was professor of political science at Mannheim University until 1993 and research professor at the Wissenschaftszentrum für Soziaiforschung Berlin until 2000. Since then, he has taken over as Vice President and Dean of Humanités and Social Sciences at the International University Bremen. He has been a member of the German Science Council, of the Senate and Executive Committee (Hauptausschuß) of the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (German Research Council), as well as a member of the Standing Committee for Vissza
