On 15 April 1912 a shocked world heard that the great liner Titanic had sunk. The news was received with horror and disbelief as not only was this her maiden voyage, but also she was thought to be unsinkable. Man believed that technology had advanced beyond anything that the elemental forces of the sea could cast up at him. The tale of the Titanic has become part of popular mythology partly because it so forcefully and poignantly exposed man's fallibility and hubris.
