Anyone who has visited an art gallery will understand the value of being able to look at paintings close up, to see the way the colours have been used and how the paint has been handled. Now you can have your own personal art gallery in this series of books, The History and Techniques of the Great Masters. Each book brings you a selection of ten or more famous paintings, magnificently reproduced in full colour, and with actual size details so that you can see the way the artist has worked — just as though the paintings were hanging on your own walls. The text analyses each painting in turn, and the captions tell you exactly which techniques the artist has used to obtain particular effects. Wherever possible, the author provides full information about the types of paint brushes, canvas and priming favoured by the artist, and how the colours were mixed and applied.

Toulouse-Lautrec has become something of a legend, almost synonymous with the gay 'nineties in Montmartre, with its colourful cafés and dance halls, its can-can dancers and lurid night life. But in some ways the legend has served him badly, as it has tended to obscure a real appreciation of the talents of this very remarkable artist. Most people known about Lautrec's physical disability, his excessive drinking and his relationships with prostitutes, and almost everyone is familiar with his graphic works, particularly his posters, reproductions of which hang on many walls.
But his paintings deserve to be better known than they are, and this book, which shows a carefully chosen selection of the works that reflect the events of his tragically short life, goes some way to redressing the balance. Lautrec was a fine artist and a consummate draughtsman, whose every line, whether in pencil or paint, speaks volumes. His concern was not landscape or abstraction, but people, and his portraits and informal studies of the characters that peopled his Hfe, from literary figures to music-hall performers, are some of the most penetrating and moving ever produced. His technical methods are equally fascinating — never afraid to experiment with techniques, he pushed the medium of oil paint to its limits in order to capture the effects he sought. Vissza
