Stand We At Last tells the story of five generations of women. It opens in England in 1855 on the eve of momentous events. Helena is about to marry; Sarah, her sister, to emigrate to Australia. In the 120 years encompassed by this epic novel we see the seeds of one generation bear fruit in the next. The family story moves from England to Australia to America to India - and back again. It covers a period of social upheaval, the battle for the vote, the devastation of war, the growth of sexual freedom and birth control, and the new world for women ushered in by the rise of the women's movement.
Stand We At Last is the story of men and women of their time, their marriages, the children they bore and the heritage they passed on to the generation of today.
